In 2022, there are an estimated 487,500 Australians living with dementia. Without a medical breakthrough, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase to almost 1.1 million by 2058. Approximately 70% of people with dementia live in the community. A significant proportion will require ambulance transport to an Emergency Department, often on a number of occasions. Travelling in an ambulance for this cohort of patient can be strange, and potentially frightening. This is not best care. Ambulance services need to be able to meet the specific needs of these patients by means of a Strategic Dementia Plan, specialized training and suitably designed dementia friendly ambulances not found in Australiab
