Japan is the newest epicentre of handmade and bespoke footwear and is home to some of the world's finest shoemakers. By contrast Australia has just a handful of shoemakers that have the skills necessary to create hand welted footwear (hand welting is a construction method indicative of the highest quality footwear). I aim to investigate the Japanese shoe making industry in detail, meet its makers, supporting tradespeople and learn from some of its masters.
