To investigate learning and development options in leadership for volunteer firefighters featured image

Australian volunteer firefighters lead teams in a variety of situations, interoperating with partner agencies, and increasingly across state and international jurisdictions. Leadership roles are often filled by those without leadership qualifications. In January 2020 the Productivity Commission found that Australia's volunteer firefighting force declined 10% (or 16,000 volunteers) in the past decade, with leadership quality cited as a major reason. Yet Australia has no consistent or defined volunteer firefighter leadership development pathways. This project aims to investigate leadership learning for volunteer firefighters and provide strategic insights to lead investment towards sustainable voluntary emergency services.
