To optimally operate a low inertia electricity grid with high penetration of renewable energy featured image
Australia is rapidly transitioning from fossil fuel electricity generation to variable renewable energy (VRE). From the perspective of a system operator, this transformation comes with several key challenges primarily because VRE is intermittent in nature and has no inertia. If left unmanaged, this can lead to system instability and in the worst case scenario, more frequent blackouts. For Western Australia in particular, as the main grid is a standalone system, it cannot rely on the support of neighbouring states. This project seeks to share and learn from the experiences of system operators from other jurisdictions facing similar issues. The proposed locations are also standalone systems with high VRE.
