To research holistic Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder prevention in urban Indigenous communities featured image

This research examines the fundamental components of FASD prevention from a women’s determinants of health perspective, as they pertain to urban Indigenous communities and their primary health care services. The fundamental components were originally developed by the Canada FASD Research Network (CanFASD) Prevention National Action Team (pNAT) in 2010, and an initial version of an updated document prepared as part of this research. The updated document describes the following 12 fundamental components of FASD prevention programs and approaches:

  1. Being respectful
  2. Relational
  3. Self-determining
  4. Women and person-centred
  5. Harm reduction oriented
  6. Trauma and violence-informed
  7. Health promoting
  8. Culturally safe
  9. Supportive of mothering
  10. Uses a disability lens
  11. FASD informed
  12. Equity informed

These fundamental components of FASD prevention provide a framework to guide program planners, policy makers and health professional educators.
