Jurors contribute in an extraordinary and fundamental way to the delivery of justice. Juries are the voice of the community’s conscience, independent of the judiciary and government. A jury represents the community from which it is drawn, a cross-section of citizens, each with their own experiences and opinions, standards and expectations.
This project explored the connection between a court and the citizen. It was, by design and throughout, an experiential journey, never intended to be an academic exercise. While I found no single court jurisdiction where the perfect support program was running, every jurisdiction I visited, to play on Sir Winston’s words, was in a state of change towards improvement and perfection. As I made my way east within North America and then across the Atlantic, my working definition of ‘ juror support program ’ grew from that of formal counselling offered post-trial, to a metaphorical lens through which a court system could be viewed, measured and judged. To that end, my vision for a juror support program is greater than the sum of this project’s parts.
